A lot has been said about cultivating habits in the last several years in the self-development & personal growth space. And it has also found its way into professional development and entrepreneurship as well. But one of the questions I often get is “Erin, what habits do I need to cultivate? How do I choose the things that will make the biggest impact?” So in today’s episode of the Goal Get It Podcast, that is exactly what we are diving into. Ready?
The thing that sets me apart from lots of other coaches in the productivity & time management space is that I specifically teach to leverage— getting the most bang for your buck. Whether that is ROI on a specific investment of money, or the results or outcome you get from a hour of your time and energy, it’s all about leverage. Because in the end, we want better results for the same or less time, right? (I polled my community on Instagram, and that is what they told me, at least.)
I think that harnessing the power of habits & routines is where leverage comes from.
How long does it take to form a habit? 21, 66, 243 days. It depends…
Your habit is as hard as it will be in the first 30 days.
Choosing Habits to Cultivate
- What are your goals?
- The ONE Thing & Prioritizing
- Is a habit pushing you closer to your goals or is it making it harder for you to achieve it?
How Many Habits at a Time?
You can always add more later. Don’t split your focus and overwhelm yourself.
I like to think of everything as fitting either into a growth zone or a maintenance zone. Growth zone means that the items, habits there get the most resources— time, attention, energy, cognitive bandwidth, money. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t doing other things as well, but that is your focus. Maintenance zone is for things that are already on autopilot or don’t need to be your primary focus, but still need regular maintenance and to happen. So after you begin a goal or habit, you might be ready to move it into maintenance zone after the first month or you may need to adjust some things and keep it as your primary focus aka in the growth zone for longer.
Not only is cultivating the habit going to make that habit easier, but the more you do it, you are gonna make cultivating new habits as a practice easier & easier.
